BEECHDEAN WIN RACE TWO OF THE 2008
EUROPEAN GT4 CUP AT SILVERSTONE
The 2008 FIA GT Championship kicked off at Silverstone this weekend and Beechdean Motorsport took their first win of the year in the European GT4 Championship race today (Sunday).
Jamie Smyth (Prestatyn) was behind the wheel of the Aston Martin N24 for the half hour race on the Northamptonshire track. Jamie got off to a great start from 5th on the grid and was running in 2nd place by the end of lap one, dropping to third and then back into 2nd in what was seen as a pretty aggressive race from the off. However brake failure 5 minutes from the end saw a pretty nerve biting last few laps, but Jamie had built up a big enough gap from the other cars whilst running in 2nd place, to bring the car home. After the chequered flag the lead car was given a 15 second penalty for an infringement on track, awarding a much deserved win for the High Wycombe based team.
Jamie Smyth, Racing Driver
“This was a great end to the weekend after the problems we had on Friday, a win for the team in our first FIA attempt is just brilliant. During the race the car was a bit difficult in the slow corners and was understeering quite a lot, but I had built up a bit of a gap after the frantic start so it was a case of maintaining my position and bringing the car home. A big thanks to all the team for their effort this weekend”.
Andrew Howard, Team Owner & Driver
“The FIA event this weekend has proved the quality of GT4 and justified our investment in the Championship. To be in a position to race cars on an equal footing, in such a high profile event such as this, is just fantastic. To take a win is the icing on the cake”.
